Scatman John: Scatman (Ski Ba Bop Ba Dop Bop)

Paradojas del destino, o quizás su tesón, lograron que su mayor incoveniente para abrirse camino en el mercado discográfico, lo convirtiera en su mayor cualidad para lograr el estrellato. Nos referimos a la tartamudez severa que lo acompañaba desde la niñez y lo tenía prisionero en esa jaula invisible para las palabras. Su nombre de "guerra" era Scatman John y tuvo que llegar hasta los 52 años -cuatro años antes de su muerte- para lograr a través de una canción, "Scatman (Ski Ba Bop Ba Dop Bop)", un éxito internacional espectacular. De nada hubieran servido sus cualidades como pianista profesional de jazz para alcanzar el éxito, sino se hubiera atrevido en fusionar el scat con la música disco y el hip-hop, y sobre todo, lanzarse a poner letra a sus canciones. Ser el mismo sin complejos, contando y cantando al mundo lo que le pasaba por la cabeza, con mucho sentido del humor y sobre todo con la necesidad de demostrar a los demas que no hay que volver la espalda a los problemas.

En 1996 comentó en una entrevista "Espero que los niños, mientras cantan o bailan mis canciones, sientan que la vida no es tan mala como parece. Al menos por tan sólo un minuto". Son las palabras de un hombre optimista que hizo de su defecto su mejor virtud, utilizándola como medio de ayudar y enseñar a los demas que todas las puertas tienen una cerradura, y sólo hay que saber usar la llave adecuada para poder abrirla.
